Today was the opening of the Greater Cincinnati Watercolor Society's Sumer Exhibit and Sale at The Barn. The GCWS is the only organization in the Tri-State area that focuses exclusively on water based painting. This show is for GCWS members only and was judged by a curator from the Cincinnati Art Museum.
I am tickled for my friends and blog buddies who won awards at the show.
Deb Ward received the Grand Prize for her painting Muncie's Pride. These ball jars on the paint chipped barn shelf was magnificent. I admire Deb's style. The feel of the blue glass jars with the rusty clasps on the lids. The look of the wood planks made you feel like you were in the barn where Deb found them.
A Difference of Opinion was Rhonda Carpenter's entry that received an Honorable Mention. I really like her birds. You can see the feathers with the purplish highlights. I apologize to Rhonda for the glare because this shot does not do justice to these fine birds.
Second place went to Jean Vance for her painting titled Stoningham, Maine.
Waiting by Ritzie Junker won third place. It was neat to learn that this painting was the artists first try on Yupo. How thrilling for her!

The last painting I wanted to share was this monochromatic called Satin, Eggs & Pearls by Wynnie Bittlinger. This stunning watercolor had such technical execution.

The Barn is the home of the Women's Art Club of Cincinnati. The Barn has a gallery and classrooms and is located in the village of Mariemont, OH. This is a remarkable building because of its history. The WACC matched funds with a grant to purchase and renovate the barn that once was the home to the first dairy of the Linder family that began United Dairy Farmers.

Side bar......I am a member of GCWS, however I did not enter a painting. I only get to participate during the summer months due to my job for the school system where I live. This usually excludes me from entering any shows because GCWS meets on a weekday morning once a month. This means I am at work when it is time for meetings or to enter and/or drop off paintings. Even though I can not participate, I do feel my dues are worth it for the ladies I have met and the speakers they have each meeting. Having stated this...I do wish sometimes that the club was more accommodating to all their members. I so would like to have the opportunity to enter member shows.
